On Wednesday the 17th of July, we, Fran, Jess and Chloe, went to the University of Northampton, to teach at yet another girl’s in engineering event. When we arrived we were greeted by Tricia Goodchild, the STEM Diversity Co-ordinater, who is sadly retiring. After saying a quick hello, we were entertained by Mad Marc, a scientist from Sublime Science who performed many daring experiments involving dry ice.
Later on, we went to set up our DNA experiment ready for our first group. As soon as we knew it and to our theme song of Little Mix’s song DNA, our class came in and sat down.
Chloe warmly introduced us, asked them questions about what they knew of DNA, and then we got into our first game, true or false DNA facts. They had to guess if the facts we stated were true or false. It was great fun and they learnt we are up to 99% the same genetically as chimps!
Soon after we got started on our DNA experiment which involved looking at their own DNA. As always, this experiment was successful because we have already run workshops lots of times in the past. The girls really enjoyed this and found it so fascinating. The children’s teachers were really impressed with us and couldn’t believe we were teaching and inspiring all those little girls. The teachers wanted to know if they could come to Lab_13 for training!
Unfortunately, we are moving to Wollaston Secondary next term and will not be able to participate in any more of these events. We have loved our time in Lab_13 and will miss it so much!
Bye!! Chloe, Jess and Francesca.
