During November I will be travelling to the United Arab Emirates to work at the Abu Dhabi Science Festival. The festival inspires the emirates’ youth through science and engineering hands-on activities, and is part of a wider strategy to build a talent base in Science, Technology and Innovation in the UAE. This commitment to raising aspirations and enthusing children and adults in STEM reflects what we try to do in Lab_13.
The festival has only been running since 2011, but has been hugely successful attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. This November alone, they are expecting over a quarter of a million children! This year there are two more sites for the festival to increase the participation of children and adults from all over the UAE; there will be a site in Abu Dhabi at The Corniche, in Al Ain at the Al Ain Zoo and in Sharjah at the Al Majaz Waterfront.
My role will be training science and engineering undergraduates in science communication and teaching them skills in teaching science in a fun but informative way. Throughout the festival I will be managing these teams and making sure that all their workshops are delivered to the highest standard.
I will be updating the blog regularly from UAE to share what I have been doing, learning and experiencing! It’s a totally different culture and the education system is quite different to ours so I’m sure I will have lots of stories to tell!
