Lab_13 Gillespie News – New Committee Members, Space Origami, and Brush Bots in STEM Club

The New Committee

Sadly the old year 6 committee left, but new great year 6 have joined. They work really hard and were really impressive in their interviews. Next week, look out for photos of the new committee around Lab_13 and on the blog as well.

Space origami

The Lab 13 management committee made some space origami during their meeting this week. We thought of doing this with some little children in year 2and 3 so first we had a go. Hannah in year 6 made this wonderful  green rocket:

Some of the committee found this task a bit tricky but we all did not give up!

Brush bots – STEM club

Carole asked the children what they wanted to do in STEM club, and the children explained that they wanted to created mini robots. Then Carole took the idea, and researched what types of robots they wanted, and she went on a website named makezine.com. On that website she found many ideas, but she was most interested in the robots made from toothbrushes, and she thought that the children would be inspired by that: http://makezine.com/projects/building-brushbot-kits/ so she made her own kits.

Before they started, the children put a lot of thought into their robot designs, and some of the children were very creative with their robots. For example, designs included a ladybird and a strawberry, and some of the children even thought to include lights in their design.

My opinion of STEM club is that it is getting children inspired in Lab_13. Every half term, new children get involved as Carole gives them priority if they haven’t been before.
