Mad monkeys turn kinder! 10/01/12

Oxytocin is a hormone that makes you feel good. It is produced when we eat chocolate and when women have babies they produce loads of it to bond with and love their babies. Now this hormone has been proven to make monkeys kinder too!

Two monkeys sat with each other and were fighting. Once they received some oxytocin (nicknamed the love hormone) they stopped fighting and shared some fruit juice with each other and became more affectionate and social.

New research has shown these great effects on monkey behaviour using oxytocin. The monkeys receive this hormone in a kind of inhaler and afterwards they would rather give a treat to another monkey than no one having any treats at all!

Oxytocin is being developed as a therapy for humans with Autism, Schizophrenia and other disorders where there may be a lack of oxytocin.
